Short courses in Bible and Theology

Are you interested in deepening your knowledge and understanding of the Bible but aren’t sure about committing to a long period of study?

At Mary Andrews College, we offer a range of short courses to get you started in theological study. Why not begin by trying out one unit (subject) to dip your toe in the water? Or you could consider enrolling in one of our shorter courses. At the completion of a shorter course, you have the option to go on to complete further study that aligns with your hopes for ministry and your life circumstances.

All our classes at MAC are run in hybrid mode with students both in the classroom and online at the same time. Hybrid classes ensure students at home as well as in the classroom have the same opportunity to interact with the lecturer and their classmates through group work and discussions.

Shorter Study Options

Single Unit Study

If you are really just wanting to dip your toe in the water, you can apply to do a Single Unit Study at MAC. A Single Unit Study allows you to start one unit (subject) without having to enrol in a whole course. Most of our units are available to be undertaken as a Single Unit Study (except for those with prerequisites). To see the units that are available for 2022, take a look at our timetables here

Perhaps you are interested in trying out one of Bible or Theology units like Old Testament Overview or Theology Overview. Or perhaps you’d like to try a unit which will help you develop or refresh ministry skills such as Disability and God’s People or Foundations in Pastoral Care.

Single Unit Studies can be undertaken in person at our campus in the Sydney or CBD or in live online lectures.

Certificate in Theology

Another shorter study option is the Certificate in Theology. The Certificate in Theology is a course of the Australian College of Theology and is comprised of only 6 units (subjects) with 12 hours of class content. The Certificate in Theology can be studied in person at our campus in the Sydney or CBD or in live online lectures.

The Certificate in Theology is an introduction to the Bible, Theology, and Discipleship & Pastoral Care. It is the perfect course for beginners to give you a solid introduction to the Bible in combination with some practical ministry skills.

Certificate Units are run at MAC on Tuesdays and Wednesday throughout 2022.

Undergraduate Certificate of Ministry or Theology

The Undergraduate Certificate of Ministry and the Undergraduate Certificate of Theology are courses of the  Australian College of Theology and are comprised of only 4-5 units (subjects) or study. The Undergraduate Certificates can both be studied in person at our campus in the Sydney or CBD or in live online lectures.

The Undergraduate Certificate in Ministry and the Undergraduate Certificate in Theology can both be completed part-time at MAC in one year, studying 2-3 units (subjects) per semester. These courses provide foundational knowledge and skills appropriate to Christian ministry but not to the same depth as a Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Ministry/Theology. The units in the Undergraduate Certificate can easily be transferred to a Diploma course for students who wish to go on to do further study.

How do I apply for a shorter study pathway?

All applicants use the same form to apply for study at MAC on our website https://www.mac.edu.au/application-process/

In the form, you can nominate whether you would like to complete a Single Unit Study, an Undergraduate Certificate, or another level of study.

Why start with a short course?

Short courses at MAC give you a ‘taster’ of study before committing to a longer course. They allow you the opportunity to get to know the college and our staff and students and contemplate where further study opportunities might take you.
