After Dark

“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?”

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.”
(John 4:11, 13–14)

In John 4, Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at a well. He knows her story, and early readers would have expected him to shun her. And yet, he doesn’t. Instead, he has his longest recorded conversation—with her. A conversation about worship, truth and living water.

This is theology not as something abstract or removed from ordinary life, but as relationship—the living God welcoming a woman into deeper understanding of himself.

Theology After Dark is an invitation to draw near to the one who offers us living water. It is an evening where we recognise and honour that the questions we carry in our everyday lives are not separate from our faith, and that what we believe about God shapes how we understand ourselves, the people around us, and the world he has made.

"Theology After Dark is an invitation to explore how God’s word and a map of good theology can help us live well in this world."

- Dr Laurel Moffatt, Mary Andrews College Principal

What to expect

Throughout the year, each Theology After Dark evening takes a slightly different shape. There may be a meal, an interview, a workshop or a time of worship, but each evening is centred on biblical teaching in community. Whatever the format, we want to open Scripture together, consider how it speaks into everyday life, and respond in worship to the God who has revealed himself in Jesus.

Along the way, you will meet others who carry many of the same questions and the same challenges, and who are trying to follow Jesus in the midst of everyday life, just like you.

We hope you learn something new and connect with like-minded people, but most of all, we hope these evenings leave you encouraged in your walk with God.

Come with questions. Come with curiosity. Come to the well with us.

Loved this. All the speakers presented in a very accessible way - language used, tone, ideas. Plenty of depth, and I very much enjoyed the personalities and bits of personal stories of all presenters and panel members and the evident warm relationships between them: made me feel part of the sisterhood.

I think this is the first dual online/in-person event where the online experience didn't feel like an afterthought. You were all intentional in putting the transitions to good use and getting us to think about bits we weren't able to hear.

Thank you for all the beautiful presentations, the delightful settings, bringing women together, encouragement to move closer to God, the time to reflect on self-care and service. What a joy!
