  • Title: Academic Freedom Policy

    Author: MAC Principal

    Approved by: MAC Principal

    Date: May 2023

    Review Date: May 2026

    Version: 2

Superseded Documents: MAC Academic Freedom Policy v1 (16/12/2015)

    Purpose

To articulate the principles of academic freedom for students and staff at Mary Andrews College.

    Scope

This policy applies to all students and staff at Mary Andrews College.

    Background and Values

Mary Andrews College is a Christian college and a ministry of Anglican Deaconess Ministries (ADM). The college affirms the Christian faith, as expressed in the Anglican Deaconess Ministries’ statement of faith and as found the historic creeds (Nicene, Athanasian and Apostles’); and upholds the authority of the Old and New Testaments as being the inspired word of God and containing all things necessary for salvation.

As an affiliated college of the Australian College of Theology (ACT), Mary Andrews College adheres to the values of the ACT which state that ‘the College is committed to open independent intellectual inquiry by faculty and students in line with its (the ACT’s) educational philosophy […] in academic and pastoral theology.’

Within the teaching and learning environment of MAC, it is expected that faculty:

    - will accept and work within the boundaries of ADM’s statement of faith.

    - will pursue God’s truth within their classroom disciplines and in research and writing.

    - will be free to engage in scholarly, intellectual enquiry and critical thinking in an academic capacity, as shaped by a Christian worldview.

    - will critically evaluate their own work and research.

    - will model ‘non-threatening civil discourse [in the classroom] which respects the search for truth in the individual student and encourages others to similarly respect that process in their fellow student.’

    - will welcome students of all faiths and none into the classroom community.

    - will not make or allow discriminatory or offensive comments about another person’s spirituality or faith commitment, but encourage fair criticism of other theological perspectives.

    - will be responsible for encouraging, facilitating and supporting positive, analytical discourse and awareness amongst students.

    - will not assess students on the basis of their own personal faith/beliefs but solely on the grounds of academic merit and required standards.

Within the teaching and learning environment of MAC, it is expected that students:

    - will acknowledge and respect Mary Andrews College’s Christian worldview and its teaching within an evangelical framework of the Christian faith.

    - will subject their own beliefs to reasoned critique.

    - will not make discriminatory or offensive comments about another person’s spirituality or faith commitment.

This policy will be reviewed every three years.

If there is any reason to believe that this policy has been breached, procedures as outlined in the Grievance Policy should be followed.
